This report was written by OpenSignalMaps user and MIT Professor Berthold Horn. He sent us an email with the fascinating observation that femtocells now outnumber cell towers (at least in New England) and with an innovative methodology to highlight areas where cell phone coverage is problematic. Other finds to watch out for: the low number of base stations carriers maintain per person and how little this number varies. We invited him to write this up, and he did!
